Data Science has emerged as one of the most lucrative career choices in recent times. Many students and professionals are entering this field because of the high demand and need for proficient data scientists in India as well as abroad.
The M.Sc. Programme in Data Science offered by the School of Applied Mathematics, Alliance University, is designed to mould graduates into data science leaders with the right balance of statistics and analytics in diverse fields of applications. The programme gives students exposure to the frontiers of statistics, machine learning, big data analytics, and artificial intelligence, helping them to acquire experience in solving pragmatic problems with the help of a range of data science tools and techniques. It also aims to nurture the students with inter-disciplinary expertise through a strong foundation in the mathematics and statistics, proficiency in programming in a variety of data science environments, and practical data analytic skills. The programme pedagogy is a blend of classroom lectures with experiential learning, including lab exercises, assignments, case studies, and work-integrated activities.

Dr. Giovanni Maria Merola holds a Ph.D. in Statistics from the University of Waterloo, Canada and has experience in academia, government, and private research. He completed his Masters in Mathematics (Statistics) from the same university and his Bachelors with double majors in Statistics and Economics from University “La Sapienza”, Rome. He also holds a Tertiary Graduate Certificate in Teaching and Learning from RMIT, Australia.
Dr. Merola teaches subjects such as Business Statistics, Quantitative Analysis, Regression Analysis, Introduction to Probability and Statistics, Linear Algebra, Probability and Statistical Inference, and Statistical Distribution Theory. Dr. Merola has authored several papers in varied areas, from quality control to multivariate dimensional reduction methods to data analysis. He values the interplay between theory, data analysis, computation and graphical techniques. He is a keen programmer in R and C++ and is familiar with several other languages and packages. He enjoys teaching and takes great satisfaction in knowing that he helped students learn.
Dr. Sumita Datta holds a Ph.D. in Physics from The University of Texas at Arlington, USA and an M.Sc. In Physics from Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur. With 25 years of experience in teaching and research in reputed institutions in India and abroad, Dr. Datta has more than 23 publications in international journals of repute. She started her research career in ISRO, Bangalore wherein she was involved in a project in Space Physics. She has done numerous governments funded research projects in her career as a Principal Investigator in institutes like Indian Association of Cultivation of Sciences, Kolkata, S N Bose National Centre for basic Sciences, Kolkata to name a few.
Over the last 25 years she has taught several courses in Physics, Mathematics and Engineering Sciences in different esteemed institutes. The key theme of her research is related to quantum many body physics and nonlinear dynamics. Her endeavour has throughout been supported by Department of Science and Technology, New Delhi and Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), New Delhi through several major research grants. Currently Dr. Sumita is involved in research projects intimately connected to soliton physics and strongly correlated systems. She has a passion for delivering invited and contributed talks, seminars at various international and national conferences and symposiums.
Dr. Srashti Dwivedi has a Doctorate from IIT Delhi, Masters in Mathematics and Bachelor of Science (Mathematics Honours) from University of Delhi. Her area of research in her doctorate was combinatorics, specifically Ramsey Theory.
Dr. Dwivedi has research interest in areas that explore additive number theory, graph theory and other aspects of Ramsey Theory or in general combinatorics. She has published papers and presented in renowned national and international conferences. She has been an active volunteer with bodies and events such as Mathematics Olympiad and Spic Macay.
