18 November, 2022
The Departments of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Alliance College of Engineering and Design, Alliance University, had the privilege to learn from Dr. Athanasios Toumpis, Lecturer and Strathclyde Chancellor's Fellow in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at the University of Strathclyde, UK. The University of Strathclyde is a public research university located in Glasgow, Scotland. Founded in 1796 as the Andersonian Institute, it is Glasgow's second-oldest university, having received its royal charter in 1964 as the first technological university in the United Kingdom.
Dr. Athanasios Toumpis is visiting Alliance University under the aegis of the Memorandum of Understanding between the two Universities for exchange of faculty and students. Dr. Toumpis has extensive experience in materials, welding and manufacturing research, specifically on the microstructural characterization and mechanical property assessment (including fatigue performance) of processed metallic components.
During his stay at Alliance University, Dr. Athanasios Toumpis, is engaging the students of third semester Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and handling the courses, Materials Science and Metallurgy, and Metallography and Materials Testing Laboratory. The research interests of Dr. Toumpis are in the areas of advanced joining and surface engineering methods and, specifically, laser welding, friction stir welding and processing, and friction surfacing of ferrous alloys.
Students from the Departments of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering are having a great time with Dr. Athanasios Toumpis who has brought an international perspective of advancements in material sciences from his global experience.
