The Department of Student Support Services, in collaboration with the HR Department at Alliance University, organized a yoga session to celebrate the International Day of Yoga 2024. This event emphasizes the university’s commitment to Sustainable Development Goal 3: Good Health and Well-Being by the UNDP.
The event was inaugurated by Dr. Priestly Shan Boaz Shan, Pro Vice-Chancellor of Academic Affairs; Dr. M. Viswanathaiah Matam, Registrar; Dr. V. Shyam Kishore, Dean of Alliance School of Law; Dr. Reeba Korah, Dean of Alliance College of Engineering and Design; and Dr. Prakash I. N., Librarian, who together lit the ceremonial lamp.
Activities and Yoga Sessions
Professor Arun Shankar from the Alliance School of Liberal Arts commenced the event with icebreaking activities. This was followed by yoga exercises. Ms. Hritika Bhagat, a certified yoga professional, led the audience through Pranayama and Shavasana techniques. Ms. Sakshi Jauhari, Counseling Psychologist at Alliance University, guided the exercises and explained asana precautions.
Background of International Yoga Day
International Yoga Day was established by the United Nations in 2014 and is celebrated annually on June 21. The day highlights the universal appeal of yoga and its benefits for promoting physical and mental well-being.
This year marks the 10th International Day of Yoga with the theme "Yoga for Self and Society." According to the United Nations, yoga is a transformative practice that represents the harmony of mind and body, the balance between thought and action, and the unity of restraint and fulfillment.
