Taking Action For A Greener Future: Alliance University's World Environment Day Competitions
05 June, 2023
The Department of Student Support Services at Alliance University took a proactive step towards promoting environmental awareness by organizing an array of engaging activities to commemorate World Environment Day on June 5, 2023. To encourage active participation and foster a sense of responsibility towards the environment, the department organized an Essay Writing, Poster Making, and Photography Competition.
The essay competition, held under the theme "Impact of sustainable development on the environment - Unique Perspectives," offered individuals a platform to express their thoughts and insights on sustainable development and its impact on the environment. Participants were required to compose an original essay in English, with a maximum word limit of 1200 words. To ensure fairness and authenticity, the essays had to be self-composed, with any evidence to the contrary resulting in immediate disqualification. It was emphasized that essays containing offensive or inappropriate language, or that targeted any caste, creed, or community, would be rejected. The best essays were judged by a panel of experts, and participants were recognized and awarded certificates for their outstanding contributions.
In parallel, the Poster Making Competition focused on the theme "Reduce wastage of Food," aiming to visually convey the importance of minimizing food waste and promoting sustainable practices. Participants were tasked with designing impactful posters that effectively conveyed the message. Certificates of recognition would be awarded to the creators of the best posters, further motivating participants to showcase their creativity and passion for environmental conservation.
The Photography Competition centered around the theme "Plastic in Everyday Life." Participants were invited to capture images that depicted the invasive presence of plastic in our daily lives, emphasizing the need to reduce its usage and seek alternatives. Individuals were allowed to submit a minimum of one and a maximum of two photographs, which were compiled and displayed on the notice board. A panel of judges evaluated the entries and award certificates to the winners, recognizing their skill in capturing powerful images that conveyed a powerful message.
The Department of Student Support Services' initiative aimed to raise awareness and inspire action among students regarding environmental conservation. By providing a platform for creative expression and highlighting the significance of sustainable development, the competition encouraged students to reflect on their role in protecting the environment. Through these thought-provoking activities, Alliance University continues to nurture a culture of environmental responsibility, empowering students to become change agents and contribute to a more sustainable future.
