Alliance University observed the National Science Day in the presence of Dr. B. N. Suresh, Vikram Sarabhai Distinguished Professor, Indian Science Research Organization, Bangalore and a recipient of the Padma Bhushan award. In his inspirational address, Dr. Suresh spoke on the role of science and technology in national development and reminisced the contributions of the early visionaries such as Srinivasa Ramanujam, C. V. Raman and Vikram Sarabhai in building the nation’s repository of knowledge in science and technology. While referring to the advancements in science and technology, Dr. Suresh stated that the nation has significantly benefitted by the “Green Revolution” in agriculture, “White Revolution” in dairy and milk production and, more recently, the revolution in information technology—resulting in the employment of a large number of young engineers and technologists. While recognizing the challenges in the employability level of graduates in science, engineering and technology, Dr. Suresh reiterated that India with the largest pool of young people in the world ought to ensure mechanisms by which they receive proper training and are able to contribute to the cause of national development in more meaningful ways. Dr. Suresh also mentioned that students of science and technology ought to be stimulated to become innovative and creative, and in doing so be encouraged to find solutions to real-world engineering problems that will serve to benefit the society at large.
