Alliance University conducted the Orientation 2024 for its School of Performing, Visual, and Creative Arts. The event brought together faculty members, university leaders, and students to discuss the role of education in preserving and promoting India's cultural heritage. With a focus on the intersection of tradition, modernity, and employability, the orientation provided insights into how the institution aims to equip students with the skills needed to succeed in both national and global contexts. The discussions highlighted the value of the arts in building a deeper connection to culture while addressing the practical challenges of today’s job market.
Focus on Cultural Roots and Employability
The Dean of Academic Affairs and Interim Dean of the Alliance School of Liberal Arts and Humanities, Dr. V.J. Byra Reddy, introduced the performing arts program. He discussed its emphasis on cultural roots, its carefully crafted pedagogy, and how it enhances employability for students by integrating traditional knowledge with modern educational methods.
Art and Life: A Deeper Connection
The Pro-Chancellor Mr. Abhay G. Chebbi explored the deep connection between art and life. He discussed the significance of Navarasa—the nine emotions central to the performing arts—and emphasized the value of learning art as a way to cultivate discipline and empathy. He quoted the Bhagavad Gita, underscoring the importance of inner unity.
Leadership in Sustainability
The Vice-Chancellor Dr. Priestly Shan addressed the university's leadership in sustainability and its integration into Indian culture. He also spoke about technological advancements and the flexible learning pathways offered through the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
Challenges in the Performing Arts
The Chief Guest, Dr. Rajashree Warrier, shared her insights on the challenges faced by professionals in the performing arts. She discussed issues such as unemployment in the field, society’s perception of the arts, the need for better infrastructure, and the spiritual aspects of dance as a meditative process.
Teacher-Student Relationship in the Arts
The Head of the Department of Performing, Visual, and Creative Arts, Prof. Sruthy Chandrasekhar (Ph.D. in Music), reflected on the sacred relationship between gurus and students. She emphasized the importance of respect for teachers, noting how this respect forms the foundation for artistic development and growth within the performing arts.
