The Alliance Centre for Corporate and Commercial Law (ACCL) hosted a Faculty Development Program (FDP) focusing on the intersection of AI and law. The session featured Mr. Snehanshu Mitra, Founder of Intellectus AI Labs and former Head of Data Science and AI at the CoE, Nasscom. Mr. Mitra discussed the impact of AI on addressing the backlog of pending cases in India and the increasing importance of AI in legal research.
Insights from the Session
Mr. Mitra highlighted the potential of large language models (LLMs) to enhance efficiency and cost-effectiveness in legal document analysis. He emphasized the necessity for AI tools designed specifically for legal research to overcome the limitations of current models. During the session, Mr. Mitra introduced 'THEMIS X,' an AI tool created for Indian legal research. This tool is capable of searching, researching, summarizing, and generating legal documents.
He also addressed several challenges in developing AI tools for legal research. These challenges include the scarcity of large datasets, the need for specialized small language models (SLMs), and resistance to the integration of AI in legal research.
Learning Outcomes
Attendees gained an understanding of AI regulation, noting that the probability of AI achieving sentience remains low due to strict regulations and policies that ensure human oversight. The session emphasized the importance of unbiased data in training AI models, which is essential for addressing algorithmic bias in AI tools. It was also discussed how AI models focus on the scientific aspects of law, while human agents contribute the creative or artistic elements to AI-generated legal results. The integration of user feedback into AI models was highlighted, illustrating how such feedback is converted into data that AI can analyze to improve tools like THEMIS X. Finally, participants recognized AI as a supportive tool in justice delivery, with human agents playing a crucial role in its ethical and effective use.
