Dr. Alick Rabson Gumbo

Dr. Alick Gumbo is a distinguished academic, researcher, and industry expert with extensive experience in business management, economics, and policy formulation. He holds a Ph.D. in Business Management from Copperbelt University (2020), an MSc in Economics and Finance from the University of Lusaka (2015), and a B.A. in Economics from the University of Zambia (2012). His academic excellence has been recognized through prestigious awards, including the Bank of Zambia Award for Best Performing Undergraduate Student in Economics, the University of Sheffield Post-Doctoral Fellowship, and the Orange Scholarship for Local Economic Development Training in the Netherlands.
Academic and Research Contributions
Dr. Gumbo has made significant contributions to research, serving as a Lead Investigator on a Ministry of Health study examining the impact of COVID-19 on marginalized communities and as Principal Investigator for the Population Council’s Adolescent Girls Empowerment Program (AGEP), targeting 3,000 households across six provinces in Zambia. He has also worked as a Consultant in national policy formulation, including the National Decentralization Policy and the Implementation of the School Feeding Program in Petauke District.
His research portfolio includes publications in peer-reviewed journals such as the International Journal of Research and Innovation in Social Science (IJRISS), with notable studies on the Psychometric Properties of the Mathematics Self-Efficacy and Anxiety Questionnaire and the Factor Structure of the Breast Cancer Screening Beliefs Questionnaire in Zambia. He has delivered invited presentations on key topics such as youth entrepreneurship, higher education pedagogy, trade policies in COMESA, and healthcare financing in Sub-Saharan Africa at major international conferences and institutions.
Teaching and Academic Leadership
Currently, Dr. Gumbo is an Associate Professor in the School of Business at Woxsen University. He previously served as the Dean of the School of Business and Management at Texila American University (2021-2024), overseeing academic programs, faculty management, and research initiatives. His role included lecturing undergraduate and postgraduate students, conducting Ph.D. VIVA sessions, and establishing external collaborations with government and corporate institutions. Prior to this, he was the Dean of Research and Postgraduate Studies at Chreso University (2017-2021), where he led research supervision, developed curricula for corporate finance, international trade, and investment analysis, and managed faculty performance and academic strategies.
Industry and Public Policy Experience
Dr. Gumbo has substantial public sector experience, having served as Assistant Director at the Ministry of Local Government and Housing (2014-2017). He played a pivotal role in policy formulation, capacity building for public sector planners, and parliamentary submissions on public sector performance. Before this, he was a Socio-Economic Planner (2012-2014), responsible for implementing social services in marginalized communities and conducting vulnerability assessments for government-funded projects.
Professional Affiliations and Community Service
Dr. Gumbo is an active member of the Economics Association of Zambia and the Zambia Institute of Planners. His commitment to academic service is reflected in his peer-review work for research on decentralization policies. Additionally, he has been a lead trainer for youth entrepreneurship programs under the Ministry of Youth and Sports, empowering over 200 young entrepreneurs in SME development.
