Dr. Athanasios Toumpis, holds a Ph.D. in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering from the University of Strathclyde, Scotland. He is a Lecturer and Strathclyde Chancellor’s Fellow in the Department of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering at the University of Strathclyde.

Dr. Toumpis has extensive experience in materials, welding and manufacturing research, specifically on the microstructural characterisation and mechanical property assessment (including fatigue performance) of processed metallic components. He has published many peer-reviewed articles in these fields, including articles in materials & design, applied surface science, and science and technology of welding and joining, and presented his work in numerous international conferences and workshops.

  The research interests of Dr. Toumpis are in the subject areas of advanced joining and surface engineering methods and, specifically, laser welding, friction stir welding and processing, and friction surfacing of ferrous alloys. As a subject matter expert in failure analysis, Dr Toumpis has supported many organisations in diverse failure investigations.
