Seminar on Contributions of Shree Subramania Bharati for enhancement of status of Women
The seminar was held on December 11, 2014, in the Seminar Hall, 1st Floor, Learning Centre.
The speakers of the programmes were Dr. K Venkatesh, Professor, Alliance School of Business, Dr. Nivedita Mishra, Chairperson, Alliance Centre of Women Empowerment, Ms Prema Vittal, Student Services and Mrs. Leela Karkaria, CSR department.
Dr. Venkatesh spoke about Shree Subramania Bharati’s contribution towards empowerment of Women through his poems and musical compositions. Shree Subramania was known as a patriot from South India who was involved in the freedom struggle of India.
Dr. Nivedita Mishra spoke about Shri Subramania Bharati’s poems and the vision for women emancipation was envisaged right in the 18th century and the relevance is still felt in this century.
The seminar ended with a vote of thanks to all speakers.
Gender Sensitization Programme for Students at Alliance University—September 2014
Alliance Centre for Women Empowerment organized a GENDER SENSITIVITY programme for freshers of all courses at Alliance University campuses in collaboration with Indian Social Institute , Bengaluru in the month of September 2014.
Ms. Sagaya Shanthi, Programme Coordinator, Women’s Studies, Indian Social Institute, Bengaluru conducted around 8 sessions where 472 students of the university were covered as per the UGC regulation.
The topics covered were gender issues with special emphasis on wellbeing of women and their safety, status of women, ragging in campuses, violence affecting women, sexual harassment and assault against women at home and workplace, rape, female feticide, Imbalance in the sex ratio in India and other countries and its impact on society, human trafficking etc.
Feedback from the students revealed that the sessions were very informative, useful and this awareness programme resulted in an increase in the respect for all women.
Alliance University Observes International Women’s Day
Alliance University recently observed International Women’s Day at an event to mark the occasion. The event organized on the theme entitled, “Inspiring Change”, which was inaugurated by Dr. Madhukar Angur, Chancellor, Alliance University—reiterated its commitment to promote women’s empowerment and gender equity under the various programmatic initiatives championed by the Alliance Center for Women Empowerment, Alliance University. The Center through its activities inspires women employees and students at the University to be instruments of social change and empowers them make a difference in their lives by contributing to the betterment of the society at large. In his address, Dr. Angur shared visionary perspectives on the global dimensions of entrepreneurship and the role of women entrepreneurs, who by empowering themselves stand out as role models in founding new business ventures, creating jobs and wealth, and above all, achieving a sense of accomplishment for the community.
The Chief Guest, Ms. Dhanavanti Jain, President, Association of Women Entrepreneurs (AWAKE), Bengaluru while speaking on the success of women as entrepreneurs, shared inspirational accounts of how NGOs in India have successfully trained women in creating entrepreneurial ventures, and particularly among communities in the rural areas of India. The other invited speaker at the event, Ms. Donna Fernandes, Founder Trustee, VIMOCHANA, Bengaluru, highlighted the crimes against women and stressed upon the need for them to seek out the support of civil society in their quest for legal justice and protection. The Alliance Center for Women Empowerment, which had earlier organized a number of events and competitions including adventure sports at an off-site location for women faculty, students and staff as a run up to the International Women’s Day celebrations—distributed certificates of participation and appreciation to the winners and participants.
